Firstly, what to grit numbers relate to? The grit numbers are the same as sandpaper and many other abrasives, although the way the diamond abrasive is used is different.
Grit size refers to the size of the particles of abrasive, in this case diamond, embedded in the matrix. This number is determined by the amount of the abrasive material that can fit through a square inch filter screen. There are several international standards establishing average grit size, and also the allowable variation from the average.
